Guys stop fighting. The writer happens to be from Chennai so has referred to food of the region. I am sure any person from any other part of our country would have done the same thing. Learn to appreciate the diversity of our country.
A north indian usually mentions dal-roti, bollywood to be representative of India … and south indians are like, ok fine we do like that stuff.
A south indian does the same by mentioning the local cuisine (inadvertently btw), and the north indian looses his mind, calls her racist, logically arrives at the fact that all south indians are mediocre. Well said, but please go back to your living under the rock. Take some more time to evolve, no hurry.

Look around for a bit and do the math yourself and you will see that they are the most hardworking and successful people in the US. You’re taking this comic way too seriously and missing its intended purpose. I had no idea what the author was talking of in terms of local food but the point of the post was conveyed.
It speaks of how we take things for granted while at home and how we believe the grass is greener on the other side.
India is filled with diversity. Just as you think other countries and their people have something unique to offer, understand that each state does the same. It would be prudent of you to look past prejudice and stereotypes.

What crap!! It is not universally applicable – the one thing I’ve noticed Indian students in the US do is to denigrate themselves by making self-effacing jokes. Which I find disgusting – you dont have to call yourself poor or act cheap or any such thing – change your mindset, when in rome, do as the Romans do!!
Nothing in the world is universally applicable. Every generalization has exceptions. Sometimes, people like laughing at themselves. And they do that only when they are proud of what they are. “Denigrate” is too strong a word. We are just goofy, bumbling grad students with a poor sense of humour 🙂

Nice post ! However i still find many people adjusting very well here. Either they get used to this culture or make sure they maintain their culture without disturbing others. Though everything in this post are spot on, i still find that our predecessors talking about the same problems has led us to believe that we experience the same. Its one’s own decisions that decides one’s life. (My own view about this topic.No offence)
There is no way out but to adjust 🙂 All said, we do have a lot of fun in the US!

What’s Suprabhatam?!
1. It snows at least twice a week here. And the rest of the time, there is residual snow. So.
2. Everyone knows how costly iPhone is. And about the bills. You made a clever decision. We people are anything but thrifty and like showing off more than saving up 😦
3. Saravana Stores is a shop in Chennai, well known all over TN, where people throng to buy cheap stuff. It is like Big Bazaar in that it sells clothes, furniture, jewellery, electronics…everything. It is cheap, sub standard and crowded beyond imagination.
4. Philly Steak and quesadillas *are* awesome. It’s just that, you start craving for homemade food after a point.
5. Yes, streaming does the work. As someone else pointed out above, there is Netflix and Hulu too.
6. Oh, I have heard of that. I have heard of advisor’s calling you at 11 in the night to ask you to fix their printer. Again, exceptions and highly rare cases.
7. I know parents who expect you to Skype every day. And ask the same questions every day.
8. The only choice I get when it comes to free pizza is the chewy cheese pizza, which does bore you even if it is free.
9. I haven’t visited a temple either. But when you visit a temple, you do (or most people do) look forward to the prasad.
10. I have attended some wonderful lectures here. I have also attended many in which I had to sit clueless in class. I have no qualms, none at all, about the quality of education here.
11. If not Zuckerberg, what about Bill Gates? I thought all Grandparents liked to boast.
12. Well, when we have copied from wiki every time we were given an assignment, it is hard to adapt. Because your brain has become blunt, and because you were comfortably lazy before. The best part is, we roll up our sleeves, dust off the debris and do our best.
13. Suprabhatham is the song they play in Tirupati which is sung by M.S. Subbulakshmi. It is played in majority of the households and temples in Southern India (at least TN) early in the morning.
I think you are a very cheery guy who does not like to complain. Some times, ranting takes off the burden. And when you rant, your logic fails at places and you take your generalization too far. Hope I clarified to your satisfaction.
Importantly, I meant no offence to anyone at all.
Ha, I do understand that the point of the post was humor and no offence was taken. But most of the things are so cliche I just didn’t find them funny enough. There are very few Indians at my university and I don’t anyone the way you are describing 😛
To some of the posters saying below about rich parents ect, I am actually fuding my own masters after working for two years and loans.
I do miss home made food. But I guess I have become an excellent cook!
Also, I don’t think my parents know Bill Gates as well. May be my dad would know him, but he is reasonable enough with his expectations 😀
BTW, the pizzas we get here for tech talks are quite good. Also most of the times we have food from an Indian restaurent which is a nice change (although not as good as back home).
I totally see you bro. This post is a over-exaggeration. I’m not sure to whose humor or intellect it appeals to. Half the graduate students in the US have rich parents in India – they are not poor. A lot of them have handsome scholarships. Not everyone’s parents are a pain in the ass.
The Indian mentality during college is to bunk classes, not take courses and projects seriously – and that’s why we are mediocre. And you know why we do this? Because our parents pay for our college education.
And I don’t even want to talk about Indian women in the US. Half of them are fugly and the other half are pseduo, bordering on obnoxious. Ever heard of an Indian woman living in the US having sex on the first date? No. Because your values prevent you to do that. BUT you want to sound cool and do shit as if you were living the American dream. Truth is you will either end up working for a mid-sized company in the US or come back to India where you will be paid as much as an undergraduate with certain years of experience.
This is a post for losers. Sigh
This post was obviously satirical, however in no means is it over-exaggeration. The rich graduate students you refer too are probably Master’s students who can afford to pay the fees, however there are a huge number of Ph.D and M.S students who come here on bank loans, and this I believe is the author’s target audience.
I can’t disagree with your statement on indian mentality, except that the above statement is the romanticized filmy view of college, and not always reflective of real life – the equivalent of the image here that college is one long booze fest filled with sex/drugs as well. While that does happen, there are the students that really do study.
Your first statements regarding the physical appearance of indian women is obviously a personal opinion, and so I accept that. Your eg of sex on the first date is grossly over interpreted as the american dream. Is that what you think the american dream is? Not the concept of a self sufficient life, independence, but sex on the first date?
🙂 I believe you are confusing the american dream with compromising cultural values, when the main goal is to simply strike a balance between the indian roots and the american culture/lifestyle.

Not all of us come to the US just for the sake of coming to the US. But I see that happening a lot with people nowadays. Don’t know what to do with your life? Do a masters or Phd. Apart from the food craving I disagree with pretty much everything else on this list. If you do not know what you are getting into, you probably should not fly half way round the earth to “study”. I know that this was meant to be funny but I just thought I’d give my opinion. No offense, its just that I get frustrated having to be classified as a typical Indian coming here just for the heck of it.

One should live in Chennai to know what it is like. Many ‘north’ Indians living here love the city for its versatile profile, the fun it offers and the friendly people. I love post, though it talks from the view of a south Indian, since I haven’t come across a similar north ‘Indian’ version.
P.S: I am a north Indian and have lived in west, north east and now in Chennai and loving it!

Although I haven’t set foot outside India and don’t have any such plans for the near future this was a thoroughly enjoyable post, especially the ppt part LMAO. On a serious note, can someone who’s studying abroad tell me if the experience of studying abroad is as glamorous as my friends make it out to be? I am really depressed as fu*k here looking at my friends uploading photos of them frolicking with hot Indian chicks in the Grand canyon/Rockies Ski Resorts and stuff.
