The United States of Irony
January 29, 2012
These are the views of two graduate students suffering from excessive amounts of assignment and lack of sleep and who share a common yearning for good food, some noise on the streets and a dirty road.
PS: Hot girls who think that this post is funny, Mr. Chan is largely responsible for it. Please feel free to contact him at @chancr7 – that would make his day.
Super! π
“Confessions of a beautiful mind”!
Thanks! π
so true……..I swear i have been with almost all of the above..
koool keep goin choos.
This is brilliant! Ultimate comedy!!
Thank you!
ROFL! Completely agree with all of it π The moar kozhambu and the suprabatham are spot on π After coming here, I find myself learning more and more about our culture that I so took for granted back home.
True. And we miss such trivial things.
This is so stereotypical. You talk about madrasi food as if south Indians were the only people qualified to go to US universities. Tell you what, south Indians are the most mediocre Indian people ever.
Your reply has been the most knowledgeable and non stereotypical I have ever encountered. You must be a very well educated and intelligent person. I would encourage you to write your version of such a cartoon, I am sure ppl will laugh at you.
Why this kolaveri? Got a south indian gf who ditched you?
typical north indian
wonderful respect for others, is this how they teach you to behave in north india???
You are accusing her of being stereotypical and immediately calling all south Indians Madrasis. The irony is too much to take in.
Guys stop fighting. The writer happens to be from Chennai so has referred to food of the region. I am sure any person from any other part of our country would have done the same thing. Learn to appreciate the diversity of our country.
A north indian usually mentions dal-roti, bollywood to be representative of India … and south indians are like, ok fine we do like that stuff.
A south indian does the same by mentioning the local cuisine (inadvertently btw), and the north indian looses his mind, calls her racist, logically arrives at the fact that all south indians are mediocre. Well said, but please go back to your living under the rock. Take some more time to evolve, no hurry.
While we’re at it, do taste the morkozhambu and paruppu usuli, IMfuckingHO you’ll like it, but most probably won’t come out here and accept it.
Dude you have got some serious issues. “South Indians are the most mediocre Indian people ever” I strictly disagree with that. Look around for a bit and do the math yourself and you will see that they are the most hardworking and successful people in the US. Even I am a north Indian and could not relate to the Rasam and all the south Indian food but I can understand the humor. I hope you will too.. Someday.. π
Dude.. calm the eff down! That’s one of the most ignorant comments I’ve read in a while. And I’m North Indian.
You’re taking this comic way too seriously and missing its intended purpose. I had no idea what the author was talking of in terms of local food but the point of the post was conveyed.
It speaks of how we take things for granted while at home and how we believe the grass is greener on the other side.
India is filled with diversity. Just as you think other countries and their people have something unique to offer, understand that each state does the same. It would be prudent of you to look past prejudice and stereotypes.
Semma !!!
Thanks Hari! π
Legendary!!!
Glad you think so. Thank you.
loved the last one…
Thanks!
Nicely written !
Semma π

Thanks Indreesh!
wah wah wah !!!
Ty.
You put what i’m feeling into an internet meme. I went to the Pittsburgh Balaji temple last week, for the above mentioned reason alone! π its awesome!
That trip is long pending for me. Hope to make it soon, at least for the sake of the prasadam π
Very true….
omg!! awesome! π
Thanks π
Brilliantly done!
Thanks a lot π
super cool compilation!
Thank you π
awesomely written ! n esp. the blog title’s too catchy ! π
ATB ! keep posting !
Thanks a lot. Glad you like it.
What crap!! It is not universally applicable – the one thing I’ve noticed Indian students in the US do is to denigrate themselves by making self-effacing jokes. Which I find disgusting – you dont have to call yourself poor or act cheap or any such thing – change your mindset, when in rome, do as the Romans do!!
Nothing in the world is universally applicable. Every generalization has exceptions. Sometimes, people like laughing at themselves. And they do that only when they are proud of what they are. “Denigrate” is too strong a word. We are just goofy, bumbling grad students with a poor sense of humour π
wow!u are a bit stuck up aren’t u?:)
Umm me? I’d like to think not.
lol not u! i meant the person who commented. wrong timing:P
amazing meme btw!:)
Thanks so much. It was just dragging and dropping stuff on ragemaker. More fun than work π
it was more the ‘why blood same blood” feeling:P glad to ppl are on the same boat:P
Awesome!! π π¦
Thank you π .
First panel; I hear you, boss, I hear you!
The best part is, the same does not hold true for girls π
True, true. I guess it’s time we demanded some sort of reservation π
Btw, looks like you just got here. Weekends get freer and freer after your first couple semesters and your doctoral qualifiers are done.
Nice post ! However i still find many people adjusting very well here. Either they get used to this culture or make sure they maintain their culture without disturbing others. Though everything in this post are spot on, i still find that our predecessors talking about the same problems has led us to believe that we experience the same. Its one’s own decisions that decides one’s life. (My own view about this topic. No offence)
There is no way out but to adjust π All said, we do have a lot of fun in the US!

Could relate to EVERY word that was said there.. and also im homesick from the recent India trip..! *sigh*..!
At least you had a recent India trip π¦

Lol yes. There are a lot of people to empathize with you!
excellent one. π So much details.
Thanks so much!
LoL….! Awesome Max…
Thanks! π .
I don’t agree with this list at all. I didn’t do anything from the column2 (in You-Yess) except that I submitted my own work (Wikipedia is not a good source).
I graduated with a good GPA and had 2 job offers before graduation.
P.S.: I went to school in Florida. π
Good for you π
pure awesomeness !!! \m/
Thanks a lot. π
Awesomeness. Now my idea of going to the so called YOU-YES is a matter of concern.
Awesome!!
Thanks :).
So true !!!
nice.. i like it..
“Never attend a social gathering… now attend every other function for free food..” i know what you did ther π !
Ha ha. Sadly, the choice for vegetarians is very limited. But then, we aren’t in a position to complain are we?

Samathu to reply all the comments. Also reveals how vetti you are. But why such a large gap between the previous and current post? Request you to write more.
Because I was not vetti apo? π Yes, I will try writing more! Thanks.

Very nice Lady!

Hilarious and totally true KD!!! I hope you’re aware that this post has gone viral and has already become a sleeper hit.
Please write more!

But then, you guys do get Hulu and NetFlix .. :D. Who needs torrents then? π
WOw 100 % true… especially the pizza and torrents stuffs… good job…!!! keep it up… would suggest ppl, phdcomics.com for masters students jokes in general….!!
That is ridiculously funny.. π Kudos on capturing a wide array of situations.

Average piece. This could be applied to every person who goes into a foreign land. Those who can wear Ralph Lauren will wear it anyway.

awesome stuff! pittsburgh kovil pulisadam was awesome this weekend as well.
Laughed so much at the “parents becoming expert”, also the last panel was brilliant. This applies to us Nepalis too.
this is legendary stuff! i am a grad student for almost 2.5 years now and i can feel all of it! i am following ur blog…! π
are u registered in indiblogger.in? if not, you should…the biggest indian blogging forum..
I did not really like Indiblogger. But it is a good site if you want to popularize your blog π
ya of course it is for popularity…and meeting other bloggers…its your choice π
but once again, great stuff…keep them coming…
since i ain’t graduating for another few months…this would be helpful π
Put feet ba! Engayyooooooo poiteenga boss! π
Dated a white chick – check
Already knew about exhorbitant phone charges. Didn’t buy iPhone.
Enjoyed snow! Posted lotsa photos on Facebook (Just snowed for two days here)
What is Saravana store?
Philly steak and quesadillas are awesome!
Streaming does the work.
Seriously never heard about baby sitting advisors’ kids
I look forward to skyping with family and friends every weekend.
Seriously, laundry every 2-3 weeks > laundry every week back in India. Neither one needs to cook every day.
Still don’t attend social gatherings. Tech talks are awesome for free pizza.
There is no Hindu temple in my state. So haven’t visited one since I came here.
Attending lectures is one of the best parts of the degree
Even my parents don’t know Zuckerberg
Again, studying is for what one is here. One shouldn’t be looking to copy from Wikis
What’s Suprabhatam?!
1. It snows at least twice a week here. And the rest of the time, there is residual snow. So.
2. Everyone knows how costly iPhone is. And about the bills. You made a clever decision. We people are anything but thrifty and like showing off more than saving up π¦
3. Saravana Stores is a shop in Chennai, well known all over TN, where people throng to buy cheap stuff. It is like Big Bazaar in that it sells clothes, furniture, jewellery, electronics…everything. It is cheap, sub standard and crowded beyond imagination.
4. Philly Steak and quesadillas *are* awesome. It’s just that, you start craving for homemade food after a point.
5. Yes, streaming does the work. As someone else pointed out above, there is Netflix and Hulu too.
6. Oh, I have heard of that. I have heard of advisor’s calling you at 11 in the night to ask you to fix their printer. Again, exceptions and highly rare cases.
7. I know parents who expect you to Skype every day. And ask the same questions every day.
8. The only choice I get when it comes to free pizza is the chewy cheese pizza, which does bore you even if it is free.
9. I haven’t visited a temple either. But when you visit a temple, you do (or most people do) look forward to the prasad.
10. I have attended some wonderful lectures here. I have also attended many in which I had to sit clueless in class. I have no qualms, none at all, about the quality of education here.
11. If not Zuckerberg, what about Bill Gates? I thought all Grandparents liked to boast.
12. Well, when we have copied from wiki every time we were given an assignment, it is hard to adapt. Because your brain has become blunt, and because you were comfortably lazy before. The best part is, we roll up our sleeves, dust off the debris and do our best.
13. Suprabhatham is the song they play in Tirupati which is sung by M.S. Subbulakshmi. It is played in majority of the households and temples in Southern India (at least TN) early in the morning.
I think you are a very cheery guy who does not like to complain. Some times, ranting takes off the burden. And when you rant, your logic fails at places and you take your generalization too far. Hope I clarified to your satisfaction.
Importantly, I meant no offence to anyone at all.
Ha, I do understand that the point of the post was humor and no offence was taken. But most of the things are so cliche I just didn’t find them funny enough. There are very few Indians at my university and I don’t anyone the way you are describing π
To some of the posters saying below about rich parents ect, I am actually fuding my own masters after working for two years and loans.
I do miss home made food. But I guess I have become an excellent cook!
Also, I don’t think my parents know Bill Gates as well. May be my dad would know him, but he is reasonable enough with his expectations π
BTW, the pizzas we get here for tech talks are quite good. Also most of the times we have food from an Indian restaurent which is a nice change (although not as good as back home).
I totally see you bro. This post is a over-exaggeration. I’m not sure to whose humor or intellect it appeals to. Half the graduate students in the US have rich parents in India – they are not poor. A lot of them have handsome scholarships. Not everyone’s parents are a pain in the ass.
The Indian mentality during college is to bunk classes, not take courses and projects seriously – and that’s why we are mediocre. And you know why we do this? Because our parents pay for our college education.
And I don’t even want to talk about Indian women in the US. Half of them are fugly and the other half are pseduo, bordering on obnoxious. Ever heard of an Indian woman living in the US having sex on the first date? No. Because your values prevent you to do that. BUT you want to sound cool and do shit as if you were living the American dream. Truth is you will either end up working for a mid-sized company in the US or come back to India where you will be paid as much as an undergraduate with certain years of experience.
This is a post for losers. Sigh
This post was obviously satirical, however in no means is it over-exaggeration. The rich graduate students you refer too are probably Master’s students who can afford to pay the fees, however there are a huge number of Ph.D and M.S students who come here on bank loans, and this I believe is the author’s target audience.
I can’t disagree with your statement on indian mentality, except that the above statement is the romanticized filmy view of college, and not always reflective of real life – the equivalent of the image here that college is one long booze fest filled with sex/drugs as well. While that does happen, there are the students that really do study.
Your first statements regarding the physical appearance of indian women is obviously a personal opinion, and so I accept that. Your eg of sex on the first date is grossly over interpreted as the american dream. Is that what you think the american dream is? Not the concept of a self sufficient life, independence, but sex on the first date?
π I believe you are confusing the american dream with compromising cultural values, when the main goal is to simply strike a balance between the indian roots and the american culture/lifestyle.
having all said n done..whatever happened to taking things on a lighter vein?!! somewhere down the line the sense of humor seems to have vanished!
“your values prevent you to do that” .Guys Don’t bother reading his posting cause that guy apears to be out of India and his only intention is to downgrade India and Indians in General.
Pashtuni your name sounds like you are from Pakistan, so for once your comments are forgiven since we all know the ‘level’ of Pakistanis.
Since you don’t know anything about ‘us’ or you thnk living with ‘us’ for a few years in graduate school tells you somethng about us then you are wrong.
Idea of having ‘Sex’ on first date tells me that you think women as disposable pleasures in life and tells a lot about the type of person you’r in real life.
Although i could have smashed you in this post but considering your a Paki and by the way people from ur country try and pass of as Indians in USA, thats a slap to your culture.Period.
[…] : Lady Kedi What : The United States of Irony Tangy : Many Indians often dream about the fancy lifestyle of the US. This post tells you what […]
is it so? well revealed reality!!
Everyone wanting go to U-S must know these facts.

Awesome Post! Kudos to LadyKedi. Hilarious and fairly accurate too! Please post more often :)!
Simply Brilliant, You managed to catch the ‘best’ of both worlds!
You forgot creating pointless blogs and updating them everyday in a futile attempt to maintain a sense of connection back home. But really good post.
Hahahahaha.. Rofl… Nice 1..
ROFL.. funny but its damn true
As an aspiring grad student I say: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
Hi to anyone who is reading this,
Please do not discriminate or put down North or South Indians. If there are a 100 faults with North Indians, there are going to be the same 100 faults with South Indians. I can sense a feud brewing and I really do not want to have been the instigator. I meant NO OFFENCE to anyone at all.
So, I may have to block people who repeatedly comment hurtful things. I am also seriously thinking of moderating comments.
Let us read it, laugh at it and not assume multiple meanings of what Chan and I may have meant.
LK
Thanks you for saying it out loud… we can fight everywhere on regionalism… π
awesome! π i ll be in the you-yes next year hopefully.. lookin forward to the myriad experiences π
LOL came here via blogadda…I’ve been in US for 3 yrs now n this is my 3rd winter n I still go brr…you’re so right about winters, they’re no fun at all…and there isn’t anything fashionable about them either…my friends in India think I’m having fun playing the snow…and even though its cold I do take pics of them n post on fb :D…but its so damn beautiful…coming from overly crowded and dusty roads does that to you I guess…anyways I could go on like this and it’ll be a blog post here…so I’ll stop…nice blog btw..subscribed!

Thats an awesome post Lady-Kedi…except perhaps the adviser part i cannot agree more with everything that you have.
Also mention something about the obscene cost of textbooks here, but there r ways of avoiding that!
And to all those who cannot find humor in this post, well don’t bother to reply Please!!
LMAO.. This is one Classic post in the making (well,, Made)..
“Research” into subject matter is top class…
This is so incredibly true, i think they should show this when counseling for studying in the US to disillusioned prospective UGs and PG aspirants. haha nicely done!
Loved reading this. Loved the humor!
I had the same situation moving from Delhi to Bangalore. Now, before you all flame me, I know, I know, this comment might hurt some of you, but its as true for me as it was true for the writer of this blog post. I just wonder how exasperating it would’ve been had the transition were to the US.
I’m studying in Singapore right now, and studied at CMU for 6 months. All this is so astonishingly true it’s.. almost not funny :p
Good work.
OH SO AMAZING !! Fantastic Stuff!! COOOOOLLL!!
If not totally but can partly relate to it. π Brilliantly funny .Loved the presentation. Remembered the ‘write the differences between’ section of high school exams. π
Hope you can get enuf money very soon to do all the things on the right hand column and also wishing that you get a hot chic π
I was referred to this blog by a friend. You are really funny and I loved reading it.I migrated to this country almost 40 years back and still things are the same.Hang on there and you will get used the life sooner than you expect. With best wishes
good work!!
Hilarious post. Despite having lived here all my life, I don’t find humor in the lifelessness of the middle east to even have a laugh out of it! Gud stuff ! Keep ’em coming.
Good one!!
Miss those days when we did this photoshop work together !!!

I am going to do MS in US in fall this yr, the left ones were similar to my thoughts π especially the iPhone one π
now MS looks tougher π¦
Lady,
I started this blog which I don’t want you to think is “inspired” from this post of yours. Because it might as well be. Just letting you know so that I might have the edge in a legal battle that we might fight. π
Yours,
A fellow blogger
Then, why is that being in India we are shown a different world all together.Grass may be greener at the other side. But, to most of us, it always seems that Life is best@USA,Canada and other foreign countries. Why is it so??
You know what really grinds my gears?? When you heard over to a disc/party and hope to get jiggy-wiggy with a firang, only to be more depressed and feel racially inferior!
<>
Is it really difficult to score some white chicks in USA? What do you think is the reason? I have a friend who wants to do MS in USA simply to date caucasians haha. I would hate to break his bubble.
ayyo raama! Lovely post!
Considering that I’m in the final year UG and going to do my MS, this hurts bad.
Great post though. Love the style of writing.
This is so true! π
Loved it! π
This is brilliant!
Considering how I’m beginning grad school and dosa maavu powder is the best I can get.
This, currently is the story of my life. Severely EPIC post. Thank you so much. God bless you.
This is brilliant! I can relate to some of those!
This is Brilliant! I can relate with some of them!
I lived abroad after undergrad for 5 years. This is so true for every culture! It’s so amazing what you take for granted (peanut butter) that you can’t find in other countries (Japan).
Sugar, Spice, and everything so supremely wise.
well written but u r assuming the people who go abroad all go for PG studies.. UG has party scenes at frat parties..
true…………………this post will be understood especially by the pure vegetarian brahmins from india. especially those who are strict veg and those from pallakad district of kerala

The post is so true. great work. Hope everyone who has interest to leave India to pursue their careers, read these once at least…..
yea yea(boring)
Ive never been to the “You-Yess” but alwz wanted to go there , there is a lot more freedom there compared to the Prison ive been living in here for 19 years. Atleast I would go out with girls not fearing someone would call my mom and tell them π¦
This is brilliant! So relates to my life at CMU…
Hilarious in its own right!
To the ‘gre score facebook status updaters’ this shall be the apt comment!
And if this the reality, then the Amrikka Maapillais are going to looked down quite badly. And that, rightly so!
Made my day, the post π
that point #1.2 .. is that really true ? may be Europe a better choice than US in this regard. π
This post is awesome !! Jus graduated and can relate to almost everything !! Wonderfully written π
This was wonderful!! Thank you very much for taking the trouble to make it!!
this is awsome
Not all of us come to the US just for the sake of coming to the US. But I see that happening a lot with people nowadays. Don’t know what to do with your life? Do a masters or Phd. Apart from the food craving I disagree with pretty much everything else on this list. If you do not know what you are getting into, you probably should not fly half way round the earth to “study”. I know that this was meant to be funny but I just thought I’d give my opinion. No offense, its just that I get frustrated having to be classified as a typical Indian coming here just for the heck of it.
To all those great minds who have found fault with post.. Take your car and go to hell.. Had a good laugh… kudos.. u dont have to be in US and justify everything… Was funny enough to make me laugh..
Ahhh the privileged complaining!
gud one..liked it.

lovely post..loved the post .. could relate to most of it.. lol..m not in the US, m down under! but yea..i feel you and everyone who’s gone thorugh this..
fuk all the guys/girls girls who brought in the topic of south and north indians.. useless racist maggots.. these are the cockroaches we need to squish in our country.. losers!
again..nice blog!
ps – others who talk shit – get a life..u don have one anyways..might as well die.. we have a population issue.
π loved the post….and yes though I am in the middle east…I can relate to everything you said!!!!!
post is worth the pain u took to make it…..comedy!!! (y)
The whole point is….Its just another stupid south indian trying to show off….If u gys havent noticed…its only the south indians who keep boasting about how good their place is….and also try to show their superiority….no one else tries to prove their region as much as the south indians…especially the ones from CHENNAI….the reason….they know very well that south india is the worst place to live in any way u can imagine…and they are just too naive to accept that fact…so they keep blabbering…this is another one of those….simple…
so u wont mind saurav rite.. ? if u stuck up in such place..
One should live in Chennai to know what it is like. Many ‘north’ Indians living here love the city for its versatile profile, the fun it offers and the friendly people. I love post, though it talks from the view of a south Indian, since I haven’t come across a similar north ‘Indian’ version.
P.S: I am a north Indian and have lived in west, north east and now in Chennai and loving it!
Grow up.
Write a piece about your experiences. We would love to hear them all.
True one.. touching one too
Really funny,but true.
Go there for UG courses, then! Will at least take care of problem #1. π
But my sis still wants to go to US.
lol the cold is only in certain parts of the US
You missed the part where they ask us for our Passports in pubs!!
good one….:)
semma π reality sucks π
Although I haven’t set foot outside India and don’t have any such plans for the near future this was a thoroughly enjoyable post, especially the ppt part LMAO. On a serious note, can someone who’s studying abroad tell me if the experience of studying abroad is as glamorous as my friends make it out to be? I am really depressed as fu*k here looking at my friends uploading photos of them frolicking with hot Indian chicks in the Grand canyon/Rockies Ski Resorts and stuff.
Appreciation to my father who told me concerning this webpage, this web site is
truly awesome.
